Hallo und Herzliche Wilkommen - Hello and welcome!

I am currently studying intermediate level German in Munich. I completed my B2.2 German at Volkshochschule München, B2.1 from LMU and B1 from Goethe Institute. I started writing this blog (since level A2.1) in order to share what I learn during the lectures. I envisaged it to be a personal note to myself more than anything else. Nevertheless, if anything written here proves to be useful to you, please do leave a comment. I will continue to upload content as I learn new things, hence it is better to read older posts before reading new ones.
Let's start learning!

Books Recommendation - Bücher Empfehlung

Read, Read, and Read More

I think the best way to become an expert in a language is to read a lot of books. It helps you by strengthening your vocabulary and you learn new phrases. Just pick something that you like and start reading. I am listing some good books that are suitable for beginners (A1 and A2). If you have some reading list of yours, I'd like to hear about it.

Some things that you have to keep in mind:

  • Before buying or borrowing a book, make sure that you check the back cover. Try to get the ones with "Grundstufe" written at the bottom. Some may even have "A1" or "A2" written on them.
  • Try to get a book with a CD. I find it particularly useful to first hear the text from the CD before reading it.
  • Make sure that you mark any words that you don't understand and make a habit of looking it up in a dictionary. Remember, the more words you learn, the better your German will be. Also, after you have looked up meanings of all words new to you, hear and read the text once again. This will help you remember the words.

Useful Sites

Very handy website that contains translations of German words to English. I particularly find it useful when I have to look up the genders.
Contains a lot of useful stuff including grammar and vocabulary. It is very well structured and well organized.
It has information about events that are taking place in Germany, about exhibitions, and a lot about Detusche Kultur.
I discovered this site when I was searching for one of the grammar topics. It is written by a German whose partner was learning German. The way grammar topics are presented in this site is very good. There are a lot of exercises that you can try after you read the lectures.
