Hallo und Herzliche Wilkommen - Hello and welcome!

I am currently studying intermediate level German in Munich. I completed my B2.2 German at Volkshochschule München, B2.1 from LMU and B1 from Goethe Institute. I started writing this blog (since level A2.1) in order to share what I learn during the lectures. I envisaged it to be a personal note to myself more than anything else. Nevertheless, if anything written here proves to be useful to you, please do leave a comment. I will continue to upload content as I learn new things, hence it is better to read older posts before reading new ones.
Let's start learning!

Dativ - Indirect Object

Grammar

By now, you are probably well aware that there are four cases in Deutsch. They are:

  • Nominativ
  • Genitiv
  • Dativ
  • Akkusativ
Today, we discussed 'dativ'. It's used when:
  • The noun is used with prepositions, eg. mit
  • With the following verbs: schenke, gebe, wünsche, sprechen (mit), schreiben.
In the plural form, always remember to append an N at the end of the noun, eg. ... mit meinen Kindern. There's one exception to this rule though, i.e. when the plural form of the noun already ends with an N eg. ... mit meinen Eltern.

Here's list of possessive pronouns and articles and their forms when used in Nominativ or in Dativ form.

Exercise

Very short exercise today, one question: Was schenkst du deinem Vater zum Geburstag? You could say something like: Ich schenke meinem Vater einen neuen Komputer zum Geburstag. Note that it is meinem Vater because it is dativ.
