Hallo und Herzliche Wilkommen - Hello and welcome!

I am currently studying intermediate level German in Munich. I completed my B2.2 German at Volkshochschule München, B2.1 from LMU and B1 from Goethe Institute. I started writing this blog (since level A2.1) in order to share what I learn during the lectures. I envisaged it to be a personal note to myself more than anything else. Nevertheless, if anything written here proves to be useful to you, please do leave a comment. I will continue to upload content as I learn new things, hence it is better to read older posts before reading new ones.
Let's start learning!

Komparativ - Comparative

Grammar

In comparative form, 'er' is appended to adjectives. Some adjectives change completely and others get umlauts. Here are some examples. Remember that short words get umlauts, eg. lang becomes länger and kurz becomes kürzer. Immediately after the comparative form of the adjective, comes 'als' (than), eg. Ich laufe schneller als du (I run faster than you).

AdjectiveComparative
gutbesser
vielmehr
gernlieber
wenigweniger
leichtleicther
altälter
großgrößer
schwerschwerer
Important!
Never use more ('mehr') with adjective as in English, eg. more beautiful. In Deutsch, always use the comparative form of the adjective.

Digressions

Here are some phrases that I noted during the lecture. They might be useful.

  • Ich denke an (I think about)
  • Ich kann rauchen nicht aufgeben (I cannot give up smoking)
  • einen Traum verwircklichen (to realise the dream)
  • Kolumbus hat America endekt und er ist gestorben (Columbus discovered America and he's dead)
  • Die Erde ist rund (the earth is round).
